Fans of documentaries and mockumentaries, rejoice!
This class teaches The Improvised Documentary Film – a fan favourite format that hasn't been performed at The Improv Conspiracy since a run at TICFLIX before the pandemic.
We ask the audience for a suggestion of a topic a documentary might be about, and then create the film on the spot using a blend of straight-to-camera interviews, group scenes and voiceovers.
The secret sauce is that one player is kept off-stage with a microphone, serving as the film's director — they have the ability to interview subjects, edit scenes and queue up new scenes they'd like to see next.
Esoteric knowledge of random topics is not required – quirky characters, strong relationships and basic Harold skills will save the day. Our documentaries are more about the people who care about the topic, than the topic itself.
The format will be taught in-class a 25-minute version, but can easily be stretched to 50 if you're looking for an exciting new format that'll be well-received for your next 3rd party show or festival run.
